Armstrong, S. (2009) Fixing Scotland's Remand Problem. In C. Lightowler and D. Hare (eds) Prisons and Sentencing Reform: Developing Policy in Scotland. Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research.
This chapter is part of a larger report Prisons and Sentencing Reform: Developing Policy in Scotland. It reviews the current trends of remand in Scotland, noting growth and particular increases for women. It also reviews research on the problems of using remand including intensifying prison crowding and making use of a form of detention with the least access to supportive opportunities. It concludes with a range of suggestions for reforming Scotland’s use of remand.
