SCCJR Policy Briefing Papers 2026

Six of our postgraduate researchers have taken on the challenge of turning their PhD theses into short, accessible briefing papers aimed at engaging and informing policymakers.

• Ülkü Baturoğlu Balcı, University of Glasgow, Gender-Based Violence in Rural Scotland: Complex Experiences and Intersecting Inequalities, mentored by Anna Souhami, University of Edinburgh.
• Emily Qvist-Baudry, University of Edinburgh, Visualising Prison Violence – Exploring the Micro-Dynamics of Violence in Men’s Prisons using Video Data, will be mentored by Katrina Morrison, Edinburgh Napier University.
• Nicola Ceesay, Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Labouring in the Shadows: Hope, Fear and Bureaucratic harms in navigating risk with “dangerous people” An examination of Scotland’s Order for Lifelong Restriction, mentored by Marguerite Schinkel, University of Glasgow.
• Jeanne Duley, University of Glasgow, Framing Shamima Begum: A Feminist Media Analysis of Victimhood, Agency and Othering in the British News Media, mentored by Milena Tripkovic, University of Edinburgh.
• Andreea Mihut, University of Edinburgh, “Stolen Stories?”: Language, Narrative, and Power in the Contemporary Criminal Courts, and will be mentored by Cara Jardine, University of Strathclyde.
• Jean-Pierre Roux, Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Police adoption of body-worn video technology in England and Wales: A Socio-technical analysis of change, mentored by Kelly Johnson, University of Glasgow.
