Working title of PhD: Intimate Intrusions: Lesbian and Queer Women’s Experiences of Harm on Dating Apps
Institution: University of Glasgow
Year commenced: 2025
Full or part-time: Full time
Funding Source: Self-funded
Supervisors: Kelly Johnson and Susan Batchelor
Synopsis:
Dating apps are now a routine way to meet partners, yet many users, particularly women, encounter behaviour that feels uncomfortable or crosses personal boundaries. Research on online harm has focused mainly on heterosexual people or on men who have sex with men, meaning that lesbian and queer women’s everyday experiences remain largely overlooked. This project addresses that gap by exploring how lesbian and queer women in Scotland describe and interpret intrusive behaviour on dating apps, including unwanted messages, pressure, disrespect, or situations that affect a user’s sense of safety. These experiences are often minimised or treated as “just part of online dating”. The project will examine how app features, wider social attitudes, and women’s own identities shape these interactions.
