Working title of PhD: Spouses of incarcerated husbands: socio-cultural perspectives from India

Institution: University of Strathclyde

Full or part-time: Full time

Year commenced: 2023

Supervisors: Cara Jardine and Laura Piacentini

Funding Source: Strathclyde University

Synopsis:

The study will explore the experiences of Indian women with husbands in prison. It aims to answer the following research questions:

  • How does the socio-cultural context of India intersect with caste, class and patriarchy for the spouses of incarcerated husbands?
  • How are the spouses’ experiences influenced by the multiple social identities of caste, class and gender?
  • How does this help us to understand the impact of punishment on spouses in India and to address bigger questions on inequality and social justice in South Asia?

Since this is an intersectionality research, the epistemological position will be guided by a constructivist approach. Qualitative research methods such as extensive semi-structured interviews spread across different spaces will be the primary method.

Keywords: intersectionality, southern feminism, prison sociology
