Fiona is Senior Teaching Fellow in Criminology and Director of the MSc Criminology and Criminal Justice degree programme at the University of Edinburgh. Her main research interests lie in sentencing, judicial culture, criminal justice and qualitative research methods.

She has a PhD and an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Edinburgh University. Her doctoral research with SCCJR, which was supported by ESRC scholarship funding, drew on biographical narrative accounts of retired sentencers to explore judicial culture. Fiona also has an LLB (Honours) and Diploma in Legal Practice from Edinburgh University and is a qualified solicitor in Scotland (non-practising). She has gained extensive knowledge of criminal justice law, policy and practice through her careers in prosecution and juvenile justice.

She is a member of the Sentencing and Penal Decision-Making Working Group of the European Society of Criminology.
