Joana is currently a Research Associate at the Institute of Criminology at the University of Cambridge working on a project with colleagues at SCCJR investigating the psychosocial wellbeing and personal welfare of women workers in organisations offering therapeutic, advocacy, support and/or practical support to socially isolated and economically marginalised women and girls.

She has an M.Phil. in Criminological Research and a Ph.D. in Criminology, with a comparative study on Intimate Partner Violence Victims’ Perceptions and Experiences of Criminal Justice Interventions in England and Portugal. She is also a trained victim support officer.

Joana’s research interests revolve mainly around focuses on violence against women, intimate partner abuse, and understandings of justice.

Alongside her role at the University of Cambridge, Joana also works as a Research Assistant in the Centre for Abuse Research (CARe) at the University of Suffolk.
