A new resource dedicated to supporting practitioners carry out sessions with young people on youth violence has been launched by the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research.

The Straight Out the Scheme: Youth Work Resource includes a boardgame, rap music, clips from the Young Warriors podcast and videos – each accompanied by a session plan, providing guidance about the content and suggested activities. It has been co-created by Fern Gillon, University of Strathclyde, and Alistair Fraser, University of Glasgow, with a group of young men from Glasgow who call themselves the ‘Wise Men’ as part of the Public Health Youth Violence Reduction (PHYVR) research project.

The resource is designed to be used both in preventative, awareness-raising work and as part of interventions with young people for whom violence is already a feature of their lives, and who may be coming into conflict with the law as a result. The intention of the resource pack is to generate open, curious and respectful dialogue with young people, about their lives and any change they would like to see.

Award winning author Graeme Armstrong who wrote ‘The Young Team’, also came on board to help with the project too. Here’s a few words from him.

Anyone working with young people in both educational and community settings can use the resource pack which you can download from the SCCJR website now.
