The Scottish Association for Mental Health Scotland, recently launched a report that identifies the need for a new approach to diverting people with mental health problems from prison.
Seven out of ten prisoners in Scotland have experienced at least two mental disorders, raising questions about whether prison is the right place for them. Funded by the Robertson Trust, ‘The Right Road: Making Diversion Work for People with Mental Health Problems’ was produced with the Centre for Mental Health, and the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research. The report reviews international best practice, examines current diversion programmes in Scotland and makes recommendations for change.
