Howard League cropOn Tuesday, April 21 Howard League Scotland will present a discussion of the media’s role in shaping political and public perceptions of punishment in Scotland.

The speakers will be:

Professor Yvonne Jewkes (Professor of Criminology at the University of Leicester), delivering the keynote addresses on ‘As Punishment or For Punishment? The Role of the Media in Driving Current Policy on Prison Design’

Henry McLeish (former First Minister of Scotland and chairman of the Scottish Prisons Commission that in 2008 published the report Scotland’s Choice), on ‘The media, politics and penal reform in Scotland’

Stephen Naysmith (Social Affairs Correspondent for The Herald), on ‘Reporting on crime and punishment in Scotland’

The event is being held in conjunction with the Centre for the Study of Law, Crime and Justice, and has been co-organised by Louise Brangan, PhD student with the SCCJR.

It will take place from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at the Collins Building Lecture Theatre, University of Strathclyde, 22 Richmond Street, Glasgow G1 1XQ. Free tickets can be booked here.
