We are delighted to announce the successful applicants to the SCCJR Research Development and Knowledge Exchange Fund.

Beyond the Walls: Exploring Carceral Landscapes Through ‘Prison in Twelve Landscapes’.
B. Arneson (University of Edinburgh) Dr Kirstin Anderson (Edinburgh Napier) and Dr Rae Rosenberg (University of Edinburgh).

The team will organise a public screening in Edinburgh of “Prison in Twelve Landscapes,” which is a 2016 Canadian documentary directed by Brett Story that explores the pervasive impact of the prison-industrial complex in the United States through twelve distinct vignettes. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion, as a transnational knowledge exchange activity that brings together scholars, activists, formerly incarcerated people, and community members to examine how carceral systems operate beyond prison walls.

Boundaries, Bodies, and Control: Women’s Confinement Across History.
Dr Louise Brangan (University of Strathclyde) and Dr Annalisa Martin (University of Glasgow).

The team will organise a symposium that will bring together scholars, practitioners, archivists and artists to explore the long and connected histories of women’s incarceration. This is novel because witch trials, Magdalene Laundries, Victorian reformatories, workhouses, psychiatric confinement, and modern prisons, tend to be studied separately. Yet these institutions shared enduring logics of gendered control, moral regulation, labour extraction, and state as well as religious discipline.

SCCJR will send out updates on behalf of both projects as soon as they have dates secured for each event.

On behalf of everyone at SCCJR we would like to offer a warm congratulations to both project teams, and thank everyone who took the time to apply.
