The Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR) is offering a PhD studentship, tenable for three years duration, to commence in October 2009. The Studentship will cover course fees (at the usual level for UK and EU studentships) and a student stipend. The studentship will be based at Glasgow University, but may be supervised by two of the partner institutions. SCCJR is an innovative and exciting criminological research centre, sitting across several of Scotland’s leading universities. The Centre’s interdisciplinary research teams work with topical and important research agendas in the field of crime and justice. SCCJR staff interests include:
- sociology of punishment (especially imprisonment)
- penal politics, institutions, and processes
- young offenders and youth justice
- gender, crime and criminal justice
- gendered violence
- community penalties
- ex-offender reintegration
- crime and community safety
- white-collar crime and crimes of the powerful
- policing
- organised crime and transnational criminal markets
- economics and crime
- public responses to crime and punishment
- patterns of and trends in crime and victimisation
- criminal careers through the life-course
- neighbourhood effects on offending.
Applicants should have an original research idea in the field of criminology or criminal justice, ideally fitting with one or more of the above themes. The studentship is open to candidates with good Masters degrees in criminology, sociology, law, social policy and related fields.
