POLICING IN SCOTLAND: ANALYSING PUBLIC CONTACT,PERCEPTIONS OF THE POLICE AND REPORTING CRIME
We are pleased to invite applications for a 1+3-year PhD studentship, funded by the ESRC and the Scottish Government, to start in September 2009.
This doctoral studentship aims to improve our understanding of public confidence in the police and policing in Scotland and contribute to the development of policies designed to improve public satisfaction with and trust in the police. The studentship will involve both quantitative and qualitative elements, including analysis of the Scottish Crime Survey and other relevant data sources.
The 1+3 award will involve participation in the MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2009/10, followed (subject to satisfactory completion of the MSc) by three years of doctoral studies on the PhD programme. The successful applicant will be supervised by Susan McVie (University of Edinburgh) and co-supervised by Professor Nick Fyfe (University of Dundee) and a representative of the Scottish Government Justice Department. The Studentship will provide an exciting opportunity to be involved in the work of the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (www.www.sccjr.ac.uk) and the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (www.sipr.ac.uk).
Applicants for the 1+3 award must have a 1st or upper 2nd class honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant social science subject and must meet the ESRC eligibility requirements. Applicants with an ESRC recognised Masters degree in a relevant social science discipline will be considered for a +3 award. The studentship includes a number of mandatory conditions as regards induction, training and involvement in policy events. Applications should indicate acceptance of these conditions and include a 1,500 word statement on your research interests, particularly as they relate to the studentship topic, and any relevant background or training (see further particulars for more detail). Completed applications must arrive by 5pm on Friday 12th June 2009. Interviews will be held on 24th or 25th June. The total award includes the payment of fees at the Home/EU rate and a maintenance grant of £15,290 for each of the four years of study.
