Successful SCCJR and SIPR post-graduate event
11 Feb 2009
A recent joint SCCJR and SIPR post-graduate event took place on 26th January at the University of Stirling. The day was well-attended by PhD students from across the two research centres (18 students attended). The day was introduced and chaired by Gill McIvor and combined formal presentations, provided by experienced researchers, with group discussion by the students. Lesley McAra provided the first presentation and gave an insightful and engaging overview of Crime, Criminal Justice and Research in Scotland. A panel discussion after lunch provided students with the opportunity to hear from four experienced researchers discussing their area of expertise: Jim Carnie, Head of Research at SPS outlined current research and developments within the Scottish Prison Service and beyond; Nancy Loucks, Chief Executive of Families Outside highlighted the lessons her experience of conducting research in Scottish prisons and internationally had provided; Niall Hamilton-Smith, SCCJR shared his knowledge of researching ‘organised crime’; and Yulia Chistyakova (SCCJR) discussed the challenges of conducting comparative research into policing.
