Professor Lila Kazemian: Desisting in Prison

12:30 – 14.00

Drawing on a sample of long-term prisoners in France, Prof Kazemian will be presenting on her study which examines the processes of adaptation to prison and desistance from crime in the French context. While the obstacles to the process of desistance in prison are numerous and significant, this research aims to identify the distinctive features of a desistance narrative among long-term prisoners. The study addresses some of the theoretical debates relating to the desistance paradigm, and also discusses whether the conceptualization of desistance employed in the broader literature is applicable to the context of incarceration.
