Prison & Spirituality: A Global Perspective

This exciting seminar, held at the UWS Lanarkshire Campus on 18th March 2019, will include the screening of the film ‘If I Give My Soul: Faith Behind Bars in Rio de Janeiro’ by its co-Director Dr Andrew Johnson combined with some insight into Professor Ross Deuchar’s own research and a Q&A session.
Dr. Andrew Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Department at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota. He co-directed the documentary film ‘If I Give My Soul: Faith behind Bars in Rio de Janeiro’. Andrew has held positions at Princeton University’s Center for the Study of Religion, the Center for Religion and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California and served as a foreign service officer in the United States Agency for International Development.
Dr Ross Deuchar is Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of the West of Scotland. He is a former Fulbright Scholar and a leading Criminologist with many years of experience of conducting empirical, qualitative research with gang members and violent offenders. He has published 6 books, and numerous articles on his work on gangs, masculinity, violence and gang desistance and also on procedural justice issues within policing. He is the author of the recently published Palgrave MacMillan book, ‘Gangs and Spirituality: Global Perspectives’
