Boundaries, Bodies, and Control: Women’s Confinement Across History

This symposium aims to bring together scholars, practitioners, archivists and artists to explore the long and connected histories of women’s incarceration.

Given the academic division of labour, witch trials, Magdalene Laundries, Victorian reformatories, workhouses, psychiatric institutions, and modern prisons, tend to be studied separately. Yet these institutions shared enduring logics of gendered control, moral regulation, labour extraction. In a series of inclusive and informal roundtable, we intend to discuss the ethics of doing this kind of work, as well as the methodological challenges of researching those whose lives are so often erased from the official archive.
