Prof R A Duff
University of Stirling
RA Duff joined the Philosophy Department at Stirling in 1970, after undergraduate and graduate work in Oxford, and a year in Seattle. His main research interests are in the philosophy of criminal law, including issues about the scope and structure of the substantive criminal law; about the criminal process; and about punishment and sentencing.
His overall aim has been to work towards an adequate normative (and therefore also critical) account of the proper role of the criminal law in a liberal democracy, and of what kind of criminal law (with what content, what structure, and what procedures and sanctions) could be appropriate for the citizens of liberal democracies.
