Working Title of PhD: The criminalisation of ‘sectarianism’ at football in Scotland.

Year commenced PhD study: 2013 (Full Time) Institution: Glasgow Caledonian University

PhD Supervisors: Dr Liz Frondigoun, Dr John McKendrick and Mr James P. Connolly

Claire’s PhD research will examine, from a socio-legal perspective, the recently enacted Offensive Behaviour at Football & Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012. The criminalisation of ‘sectarianism’ at football under section 1 of the Act will be theoretically analysed and critically appraised as well as the creation and construction of the statutory offence itself as a legislative tool. Empirical insights of key decision-makers in the attribution of criminal responsibility for the new offence will form the focus of empirical research.

Claire is also tutor of Scots Criminal Law for LLB undergraduate students at Glasgow Caledonian University.
