About

Liz Gilchrist is Professor of Forensic Psychology at the Caledonian University.  She  is also a Chartered Forensic Psychologist and a part-time psychologist member of the Parole Board for England and Wales.

Professor Gilchrist’s expertise is in the area of domestic violence, fear of crime, criminal justice decision-making and impact of victimization.   She has both clinical and research experience with perpetrators and victim/survivors of domestic violence.  In the early 2000s she led the national study, funded by the Home Office, to explore criminogenic need in domestic violent offenders, which involved research with perpetrators and victim/survivors and she has continued researching in this area , in child protection and domestic violence, and in domestic violence and risk, since then.

Professor Gilchrist’s current research interests focus greatly on aspects of cognition underpinning different sub-groups of intimate partner violence offenders, risk associated with types of domestic violence offender and conflict in managing the needs of women and children who have been affected by intimate partner violence and how thinking theoretically can address these issues.

Professor Gilchrist is currently involved in work ( with Dr. T.A Gannon, University of Kent) with young people exploring interpretation of ambiguous stimuli with a view to developing theoretical understanding of young people’s offending and is hoping to widen this to address issues linked to dating violence, domestic violence and persistent courtship behaviours.

Professor Gilchrist is currently a member of the DFP main committee and the DFP training committee and is the DFP representative on the Professional Practice Board of the British Psychological Society. She organised the Division of Forensic Psychology conference 2004 and is a member of the Quality and Standards committee of the Parole Board.  She has recently been appointed as a member of the Research Advisory Group for the Risk Management Authority in Scotland.
