About

Ann is a third year PhD student at the University of Stirling whose doctoral research examines how the youth justice system and residential care institutions (RCIs) of Jordan deal with children in conflict with the law. Ann's fieldwork is concentrated on evaluating the rehabilitative programs provided for children in RCIs from the children’s own experiences and perspectives.  The aim is to reach a greater understanding of the extent to which children find the services provided for them beneficial in serving their best interests and needs, as well as whether or not RCIs are able to reduce the rate of crimes committed by convicted children. Unlike the previous research wherein children were marginalised throughout the research process, Ann perceives children as competent social actors, having their own needs, opinions and interests that should be heard by policymakers.  The execution of her research—designed mainly for and with children—reflects this value.
