About

For 29 years a prison governor, Roger is now working in Glasgow Caledonian University, where he co-directs the Glasgow Centre for the Study of Violence. Has specialised expert knowledge in the area of human rights in prisons and the public supervision of prisons. Was Head of Training and Development for the Scottish Prison Service for five years during which time he developed and introduced a range of strategic management and organisation development processes. Has authored internal management development texts on prison management and prison law. Played a major part in the introduction into Scottish Prisons of modern disciplinary and complaints investigation procedures. Is an associate of the International Centre for Prison Studies, Kings College, London. Has worked in the recent past In Turkey, the Russian Federation, Armenia, Libya and Bosnia advising on the management of prisons in accordance with international human rights standards, the development of training and development for prison administrators and staff, the management of life sentenced prisoners, the use of clemency and independent investigation of complaints and allegations.

Although following a career in prison management, has wide experience in the development and introduction of training, in presentation, facilitation and coaching and in the production of educational and training materials. Has played a significant role in Scotland in the development and introduction of a wide range of professional and managerial initiatives in the prison service and has experience of supporting change in other jurisdictions. Was Deputy Chairman of the Lead Body that developed vocational qualifications in Custodial Care and was responsible for the development and implementation of the policy for their introduction into the Scottish Prison Service.
