Synopsis: The aim of the proposed research is to better understand the practice, culture and identity of sheriffs in their sentencing role, in order to better inform public understanding of and debate about sentencing. To achieve this objective without disturbing the regular labour of the sheriff courts, the proposed research will involve the observation of sentencing diets and, a flexible interview schedule with sheriffs. The research is being undertaken for a PhD at the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research in the University of Glasgow.
